How much light do you really need for a room?

The answer to this depends on whether or not you are a dark soul or a creature of the light. For purpose of this entry, I will focus on light beings, and save the Goth test for another post. There is a proven formula for calculating the amount of light you need, expressed in wattage, and I will share it with you. Multiply the length times the width of the room you wish to light, and then multiply that number by 1.5. This will give you the wattage you need for proper illumination. For example, a room is 15 feet by 20 feet. That equals 300 square feet. Then multiply that number by 1.5, which equals 450 watts of juice necessary. So three 150 watt torchiere lamps should do the trick or a nine light chandelier with 50 watts each lamp. Of course, 300 square feet is a good size room, and you may not want to light every single corner of it, so keep that in mind before going hog wild on the wattage. If you have a task light situation, the formula changes to 2.5 x the square footage. Task areas include hobby rooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garage workshops, classrooms, or drafting desks. If you need to look over architectural plans, glue airplanes, or teach munchkins, go with this formula. So, know the rule before you break it. Don't let darkness rule your life!
