How long does it take to install my low voltage landscape lighting, transformer and timer?
It depends on how handy you are with wire connectors, digging trenches and assembling landscape lights. It may take a novice 4 hours or more for this project.
What does a transformer do?
This device steps down the 120 volts from your household outlet to 12 volts to power your outdoor lighting.
How do I calculate the size of transformer I will need?
It may help to draw your landscape lighting design on a piece of paper or whiteboard before you leave the house to buy a transformer. In your drawing, mark where you'd like to place your landscape light fixtures. What wattage is each landscape lighting fixture? Add the wattage of all your landscape lights together. Multiply this number by 1.5. A transformer rated wattage must be 1.5 times the total wattage of the landscape lights that you plan to install. Basic transformers have a rating of 100 to 300 watts. Select a transformer with a higher rating to accommodate more lights on a longer cable.

What will I need?
You'll need a GFCI outlet, timer, plastic outlet cover, cable, landscape light fixtures with wire connectors, wood screws, screwdriver, and a shovel.
What sequence do I use to complete the residential landscape lighting installation project?
First, connect the cable to the transformer. In some cases, you'll need to strip the ends of the wire. Do not worry which wire goes into which terminal. Second, mount the transformer next to the GFCI outlet with wood screws. Third, snap the sockets and put together the landscape light fixtures according the lighting manufacturer's directions. Fourth, place the lights where you'd like them to be in your yard and run the cable from light to light. Fifth, snap the landscape lighting fixtures to the cable using the wire connectors. Wire connectors are also called pinch connectors since they lock into place and pierce the cable to make contact with the power source. Let the cable remain on the ground. Do not bury the wires yet. Sixth, use a shovel to dig a 6" trench alongside the cable. The last three steps require you to install a plastic cover on the outlet, test the lights and then bury the cable with dirt or mulch.
